Save The Planet.
Recycle Your Battery.

Rad Power Bikes and Redwood Materials are setting a new industry standard with a first-of-its-kind ebike battery recycling program for Rad riders. Just drop your old battery off at RadRetail, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Why should I recycle my battery?

In short, it’s good for the planet. Ebike ridership is growing quickly, and while it's certainly helping the environment, battery waste can still be an issue.

This new recycling program prevents your old battery from ending up in a landfill. Redwood Materials will recover more than 95% of your battery’s critical metals to build new batteries to keep up with the demand for more energy-efficient transportation.

How it works

Riders can bring their old Rad ebike battery to any US RadRetail store, and simply hand it to an associate. There’s no need to call ahead, make an appointment, or even package the battery.

Rad’s retail team will collect and package batteries to prepare them for shipment to Redwood Materials. Then, they’ll return to Redwood facilities for recycling, refining, and use in the next generation of micromobility batteries.

Please note, we are only accepting ebike batteries from Rad Power Bikes as well as small lithium ion batteries and rechargeable devices.

Why we partnered with Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials shares our commitment to promoting and enabling sustainable transportation solutions.

One of the reasons we partnered with Redwood Materials was that they could provide details about every element of the battery being recycled, all the way down to the actual Lithium cells.

Since a limited rollout began earlier this year in select locations, we’ve recycled hundreds of Rad ebike batteries.

When should I recycle my battery?

Over time, all batteries degrade, whether it’s the high-quality one on your Rad ebike or the AAs in your TV remote.

A rider who drains a full battery and recharges it back to full every day, seven days a week, will see about 2.5 years of life from their battery, while a casual rider's battery can last closer to 6-7 years.

If your battery is no longer performing, has been damaged, or if you’ve upgraded to a new model and no longer need your old battery, we’d love to take it off your hands.

What about other batteries?

RadRetail stores in the U.S. also accept small batteries and rechargeable devices for recycling, including lithium ion batteries, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and even old power tools.

All you have to do is drop them off at Redwood Materials’ self-service kiosk, located in all U.S. RadRetail stores.

If you don’t live near one of our retail locations, you can mail small batteries or devices to Redwood Materials for recycling. Please note that this service does not include ebike batteries.

WARNING: Using a damaged battery or charger can damage additional components or create a fire hazard. Stop using your battery and charger and contact Rad Power Bikes immediately if any of the following occur:

  • Your charger’s flexible power cord or output cable or any of the electrical cables on your ebike is frayed, has broken insulation, or any other signs of damage.
  • Your battery or charger is physically damaged, non-functional, or performing abnormally.
  • Your battery or charger experienced a significant impact from a fall, crash, or shipping damage, with or without obvious signs of damage.
  • Your battery is leaking a clear, pungent, gel-like substance (which is potentially corrosive and flammable).
  • Your battery will not fully charge (not all of the LEDs will light up) after the battery has been charging long enough so that it should be fully charged, i.e. it’s been plugged in at least an hour longer than the time cited in “Estimated charging times” on page X and/or the LED or LEDs on the charger indicate it has finished charging.
  • Your battery was submerged in liquid or had extensive water exposure or damage.
  • Your charger becomes too hot to touch (it’s designed to get warm with normal use), makes an unusual smell, makes a popping sound, or shows other signs of overheating.

Store any damaged or potentially damaged battery or charger in a safe, dry location away from the house and other flammable materials/structures and, as soon as possible, recycle or otherwise dispose of it according to local rules. Replacement batteries and chargers are available at radpowerbikes.com.
